Stillspotting NYC

STILLSPOTTING NYC

For stillspotting nyc: staten island, sound artist Justin Bennett and poet Matthea Harvey present Telettrofono, an audio walking tour that braids history with fantasy along and around the waterfront. Telettrofono will be offered in the St. George and New Brighton neighborhoods of Staten Island for four summer weekends: July 14–15, July 21–22, July 28–29, and August 4–5, 2012. Starting from a stillspotting nyc kiosk, located near the Staten Island Ferry Terminal in St. George, visitors will take a soundwalk, guided by an approximately one and a half-hour recording.

Do Ho Suh - Home Within Home

LEEUM, Seoul Korea

Since earning his Master of Fine Art degree from Yale University in 1997 and participating in the important group exhibition “Greater New York” at the P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center in 2000, Do-Ho Suh has had an extraordinarily active and continuously evolving career for over a decade. In 2001 he was one of two artists representing Korea at the Venice Biennale, and since then, he has shown his work at prominent venues around the world such as the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Serpentine Gallery, and the Mori Art Museum. He was also invited to the 2010 Venice Architecture Biennale. The present exhibition at Leeum, which marks the artist’s first solo exhibition in Korea in almost a decade, presents an excellent opportunity for examining “home,” the representative subject in Suh’s oeuvre.

An interest in tension and dichotomy fuels my artwork. Continually I attempt to merge the delicate with the strong, to seduce and repel, to obscure and reveal, and to combine the hand and the machine. A conceptual tension arises between beauty and darkness in my work, alluding to the fundamental struggles inherent in the human condition. Using the framework of cultural constructs, such as abstraction, codification, circumscription, my work highlights the absurdity they often impose. By pitting the organic or visceral against the institutional, I seek to reveal a dark humor or tender fragility in the seeming contortions that often underpin our lives.

I often rely on raw materials and found objects to function as would text or imagery, allowing the history, function, metaphorical value and/or sensibility of each element to contribute to the work’s intent, along with my own investment of labor. Meticulous handwork transforms humble materials into the precious, mirroring how our own ephemeral lives become precious through our own personal toils.

The Charles H. Scott Gallery is pleased to present The Voyage, or Three Years at Sea Part III featuring the work of Dorothy Cross, David Zink Yi, Fiona Bowie, Sonia Hedstrand, Troy Morgan, Terry Kerby, Zarh Pritchard, The Laboratory of Marine Obscuriosity and Spectaculars. The exhibition is the third in a multi-part series about the sea. While the first two exhibitions focused on lighthouses and ill-fated voyages, this instalment is about what is below the water’s surface.

CRAFT AT CCA- New Curriculum!-interesting..

California College of the Arts is pleased to announce a newly implemented undergraduate craft curriculum developed by the following five programs:
Ceramics | Glass | Jewelry / Metal Arts | Sculpture | Textiles

These fine arts programs have collaborated to create a shared curriculum to better prepare their graduates for success in the 21st century. The new courses are required for students in those majors, but open to any CCA student who is interested in the topic.
